Kidnap attempt: Chekiye Village Council demands exemplary judgment

Dimapur, August 23 (MExN): Chekiye Village Council today condemned the attempted kidnapping of a 13-year-old girl child at Chekiye village on August 20 by one Tohuto, a resident of Model village, 5th Mile.

“The failed attempt of the kidnapping does not minimize the gravity of the case at all if any sensible person applies his/her mind what could have happened to the small innocent girl,” the council asserted in a press statement issued by its chairman, Toiho Yeptho and secretary, Mughaho Zhimomi.

It noted that the accused, who is a stranger to Chekiye village, walked all alone inside the church compound and “had the audacity” to call out the child from Sunday school classroom asking her name and “trying to lure her by falsely telling her that her friends are calling her.”

Such “evil action” even inside the church vicinity has created a fear psychosis in minds of the society, it maintained. “Therefore, it is expected from the law enforcing agencies viz. police and prosecution to pursue the case with all sincerity so that an exemplary judgment is pronounced and befitting punishment is awarded to the accused.”

Expressing confidence in the procedures followed by the police so far in charge sheeting the case (registered as PS (women) 70/17 and GR-577/17 in the court), the village council however asked the police to unearth the reason to attempt to abduct the child by the accused. “Was it for rape, murder, child trafficking or any other reason?” Meanwhile, it questioned whether the police have identified the white gypsy used in the attempt to kidnap the child in the first instance. It also asked whether the police have identified the motorcycle and the friend of the accused in the second instance when they returned to Chekiye village. Further, the Chekiye Village Council queried whether police have taken the statements of all relevant witnesses of the crime.

The council assured all concerned authorities that it will give all out cooperation so that justice prevails and confidence of the people is restored. “The Chekiye village council and its wings of organizations of the village would leave no stone unturned to bring this case to its logical conclusion,” it added.

CSTH: Chekiye Sulimi Totimi Hoho (CSTH) condemning the incident stated the accused has committed a criminal offence of grievous nature. “The shameful and illegal act of the accused person without any sense of morality has completely disregarded human life,” said CSTH president, Vishili A Swu and general secretary, Shenili K Zhimo in a press release. The Hoho also extended cooperation to the law enforcing agency in the interest of investigation so that the accused person be booked under the most stringent and relevant sections of law. It further appealed to the authorities not to release the accused on bail, but provide stringent and befitting punishment to him.

Model village orgs: Model Village Youth Organization, Women Society, and Model Village Students’ Union have also condemned the attempt to kidnap. The three organizations of Model village, 5th Mile in a joint statement supported the decision given by various organizations/ bodies of Chekiye village. “Being a peace loving village such acts are totally unacceptable in the society,” they affirmed. The organizations meanwhile appealed to the authorities concerned and law enforcement agency to bring the accused to book as per the law.
