Aizawl, September 17 (NNN): At least 49 people have died of drug abuse since January till September 5, 2016 in Mizoram, registering the highest number of death in 12 years. According to a record maintained by Excise & Narcotic Department, the deceased include 41 males and 8 females. While the number of people who died due to misuse of drugs during 2015 was 27, the number of dead people in just 8 months of the current year has made up to 49 registering the highest number of death after 2005. Heroin was the main drug that led to highest number of death. Out of 49 deaths, 27 people were heroin addicts. The record of Excise and Narcotics Department shows that as many as 1,391 people died due to drug abuse during the period from 1984 to September, 2016. In 2012, 45 people died due to drug abuse, 36 in 2013, and 38 in 2014.
