Mount Tiyi College, Wokha conducted a one- day national seminar on ‘NEP 2020- Transforming India’ at the college’s conference hall on November 24.

The seminar was organized by the Research Committee and IQAC Mount Tiyi College and sponsored by Indian Council of Social Science Research – NERC, Shillong. Dr Karen L Donoghue, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, NEHU, Shillong was the special invitee.

Dr Karen, in her keynote address, highlighted the key points of NEP 2020, while reminding that this is the third initiative of the Government of India in reforming the Indian Education Policy and the two other times that the policy reformed was in 1968 and 1986.

She further highlighted that the NEP 2020 aims to provide holistic education, focusing on all round development such as vocational skills, extra curriculum activities, and communication skills.

Dr Karen also mentioned that there is a focus on regional languages and urged the students to set their eyes on taking up regional languages apart from the two other national languages. The NEP, unlike any other educational policy, gives students a very massive flexibility in regard with choices, she also added.

Dr Karen also dwelt on the various challenges faced by the NEP which include changing the mindset of the people with regard of the present education system, the policy being very content intensive etc. She also noted that technology should only be used as an extension of distance learning process and not a replacement of teaching learning.

During the second session, Dr Rosanna Kikon, Associate Professor, Mount Tiyi College, in her address, pointed out that there are negative as well as positive aspects of NEP 2020, and in order to come up with an amicable solution, such seminars are being conducted.

Dr Rosanna expressed that one of the most commendable aspect about NEP 2020 is the skill development courses. Considering the unemployment scenario in India, there is a need of promoting skill and development courses, she stated.  Besides, the positive aspect of multi-linguistic in education is to protect the endangered languages in India, she emphasized.

Furthermore, Dr Rosanna maintained that NEP2020 can be an opening door for the students as they can always opt for development courses which can provide opportunities in many ways. A discussion hour on NEP 2020 was also held in the later part of the seminar.
