Nagaland DLSAs commemorate World No Tobacco Day

Dimapur, June 1 (MExN): With the aim to propagate the harmful effects of tobacco and relevant laws, District Legal Services Authority across the state commemorated World No Tobacco Day with the theme ‘Tobacco and Heart Disease’ on May 31.  

KOHIMA: Kohima District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA) in collaboration with National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP), Department of Health & Family Welfare organized a walkathon to commemorate the day at Old MLA junction.  

Flagging off the walkathon, Mezivolu. T Therieh, Member Secretary NSLSA encouraged the student to gave up the harmful consumption of tobacco substance. She also briefed about the meaning of observing world no tobacco day.  

Delivering short speech, Dr. Arenla Walling, Nodal Officer NTCP said that the World Health Organization designated the theme of World No Tobacco Day 2018 focusing on cardiovascular health. She informed that tobacco use is a known and important risk factor for cardiovascular disease, including coronary heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disease.  

Dr. Arenla Walling appraised that 12% of all heart disease deaths are contributed by active and passive smoking, however the knowledge on their association of the public is low.  

Four schools and 1 college- Stella Hr. Secondary School, Ruzhukhrie Govt Higher Secondary School, Dr. Neilhouzhu Kire Higher Secondary School, Mezhur School and Kohima College participated in the walkathon. Certificates were also given to the participants.  

PHEK: Phek District Legal Services Authority observed World No Tobacco Day with government higher secondary school at Meluri Town. N. Longshithung Ezung, Chairman PDLSA gave the keynote address while Mamang Singson, Retainer Lawyer, PDLSA spoke on COTPA 2003. More than 80 students attended the programme. Posters campaign was also conducted by the students.  

The 50 students and teacher in charge of Legal Literacy Clubs from three schools in Phek - Christian Mission Higher Secondary School, Holy care school and Christian Mission Higher Secondary School conducted a town-wide pamphlet campaign on tobacco awareness in observance of World No tobacco day.  

The PDLSA in collaboration with the District hospital, Phek observed the World no tobacco day at Chapel hall, district hospital, Phek. Vethothi Vero, Panel Lawyer, PDLSA spoke on the COTPA 2003. Dr. Reyosalu, District Nodal officer, NTCP spoke on the effect and impact of smoking and consumption of cigarettes and other tobacco products. Students bodies, Phek town youth society, NSACS, Nurses attended the program.  

Meanwhile, PDLSA also handed over compensation received under the Nagaland Victim Compensation Scheme 2012 to the father of a rape victim in the presence of Pochury Hoho, Women Hoho, GB DBs and administration Meluri division, Phek, witnessed the by the EAC Meluri and Pochury Hoho Official, at ADC office conference hall, Meluri.  

PEREN: Peren District Legal Services Authority (PDLSA) in collaboration with Department of Health and Family Welfare, Peren observed World No Tobacco Day with a theme ‘Tobacco and Heart Disease’ with the students and teachers of Ibaung Thou Memorial School , Jalukie.  

Chairing the programme, Somet C. Chang, CJM cum Secretary PDLSA highlighted the importance of World No Tobacco Day and gave a brief introduction of the services given by the Legal Services authority through the assistance of the PLV and PL.  

Delivering Keynote Address, Dr. Sabino Kuotsu, Nodal Officer for NTCP highlighted the hazards and ill effects of Tobacco consumption which leads to cancer, heart disease and other illness.  

She informed that according to India Global Tobacco Survey, in North East, Mizoram begged the highest and Nagaland second highest in consumption of Tobacco, while the Global School Personal survey (GSPS) 2003 has reported that in Nagaland 55% of the population are tobacco users, male 68%, female 28% , school children 37% , male school children 55% and female school children 18%.  

Deliberating on the topic ‘Tobacco and heart disease’ Dr. Supongmenla Deputy CMO, Peren highlighted on how the consumption of Tobacco affects the heart and other related diseases.  

Speaking on COPTA ACT, Italang Ramlia, Government Pleader cum APP, Peren appraised that the Act prohibits smoking of tobacco in public places, except in special smoking zones in hotels, restaurants and airports and open spaces and advertisement of tobacco products including cigarettes is also prohibited.  

He said that the Tobacco products cannot be sold to person below the age of 18 years, and in places within 100 yards radius from the outer boundary of an institution of education, which includes school colleges and institutions of higher learning established or recognized by an appropriate authority.  

Italang Ramlia further said that tobacco products must be sold, supplied or distributed in a package which shall contain an appropriate pictorial warning, its nicotine and tar contents. He pointed out that cigarette packets are required to carry pictorial warnings of a skull or scorpion or certain prescribed pictorial warnings along with the text Smoking Kills and Tobacco Causes Mouth Cancer in both Hindi and English.  

MOKOKCHUNG: The Mokokchung District Legal Services Authority (MDLSA) in collaboration with Health & Family Welfare Department conducted two awareness programmes at MTBA United Christian Fellowship Church and Town Higher Secondary School Mokokchung with the theme “Tobacco and heart disease”.  

Keynote address was delivered by Khape Koza, Principal District & Sessions Judge MDLSA. Exhortation by Dr. Kibang, Deputy Chief Medical Officer IMDH, Dr. Sentirenla Jamir, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery IMDH presented on ill effects of tobacco. Dr. Nichukholie Vupru Orthodontist IMDH presented on the ill effects of tobacco.  

ZUNHEBOTO: Zunheboto District Legal Services Authority organized walkathon, where Niechochiyi Suyie, Chairman ZDLSA and District & Sessions Judge Zunheboto spoke on the topic “Significance of anti-tobacco day”. Prayer of blessings was said by Rev. George Paralkal, St. Anthony School Zunheboto. The programme was chaired by Tovi Z. Yepthomi, Retainer Lawyer ZDLSA.  

Meanwhile, Chairman ZDLSA also handed over Victim Compensation to the family members of the victim in presence of Kiviho, APRO Zunheboto and J khetoholi, Yepthomi PP Zunheboto.
