Need of school counseling in Nagaland: NEA

Nagaland Education Association (NEA) president Dr. Zavise Rume, Associate Professor, SCERT, Nagaland today stressed the need for professional counseling services due to the increasing complexities of modern day living.  

“Young children are experiencing all kinds of mental anxieties and emotional stresses. Therefore, there is a need to focus on physiological, emotional and psychological wellbeing of the students rather than a normal school routine exercise,” he said while speaking on the topic “The need of school counseling in Nagaland” at one day conference-cum- interactive session for DEOs/DDEOs/SDEOs/JEOs/Deputy Directors/Assistant Directors here at the Capital Convention Centre.  

In view of this need, he suggested the state government to frame a clear cut policy on school counseling to regulate necessary laws to ensure that comprehensive school counseling is made an integral part of school curriculum to cater to the needs of emotional and mental wellbeing of the students.  

He appealed the state government authority to invest necessary resources for creation of more posts of counselors to ensure that every school should have teachers trained in counseling skills as school counselors, establish a state bureau of guidance and counseling, strengthen the existing infrastructures, set up a state level committee on school counseling, frame recruitment policy for appointment of school counselors, organize regular training programme to train every teacher to be oriented on the basic skills of counseling, develop a textbook on counseling for secondary students, set up a district level committee on school counseling, appoint district level and block level counselors, develop a school-industry linkage, launch a community based career guidance and counseling service, launch a community and parental training on counseling, promote Naga indigenous method of counseling, launch a skill-based job oriented vocational courses, set up a professional School Counseling room, set up a school counseling committee and form a career club in schools colleges and university departments.  

He also discussed about the North East Career Club to promote healthy interactions on issues related to career development.
