NTC welcomes move on Rongmei tribe issue

Kohima, April 27 (MExN): The Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) has congratulated the Government of Nagaland headed by Chief Minister Shurhozelie Liezietsu for having revoked the recognition of Rongmei as indigenous tribe of Nagaland.

“The decision of the cabinet has now removed the controversy and its subsequent conflicts on the issue between sections of people,” stated the NTC media cell in a press release today. The body considered the decision to be the “consequence of maturity and statesmanship of the leadership.”

Meanwhile, the NTC cautioned the Government to be “meticulous” about the Rongmei indigenous inhabitants’ figure of 1313 and its lineage which, it observed, is an “exclusive administrative enumeration list and remains controversial.”

“The fact being that legitimising the said figure without proper scrutiny and without following the laid down standard procedure becomes self contradictory,” the NTC stated.
