RI to rape accused in Phek

PHEK, NOVEMBER 17 (MExN): A man accused of raping a minor girl in Phek was sentenced to 10 years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) following a year-long trial at the court of the Sessions Judge cum Special Judge, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), Phek. The case dates to September 2016.  

According to a press release issued by the Samuel Ritse, Assistant Public Prosecutor -cum-Government Pleader, the man, identified as Surhoseyi Keyho, was facing trial after he was arrested by the police in connection to an FIR lodged at the Phek police station. The charge against him was committing rape on a 14 year-old domestic help.  

The release said that the court after hearing both the prosecution and defence and the “evidence on record” found the accused guilty under IPC sections 375, 376 and section 6 of the POCSO Act.  

“The trial court found that the prosecution could able to prove the offence U/S – 375 IPC r/w Section 5 POCSO Act beyond reasonable doubt against the accused…”  

“Accordingly the trial court convicted the accused for committing rape upon… a minor and sentenced the accused to undergo Rigorous Imprisonment for a period of 10 years and also to pay a fine of Rs. 10,000/- which is punishable U/S 376 IPC and also for committing aggravated… sexual assault which is punishable U/S-6 of the POCSO Act,” the judgment said.
