Joining the ‘headgear’ controversy following remarks by Congress Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor, the Nagaland Governor PB Acharya today stated that the former should “respect diversity” and apologise.

Tharoor’s comment on Naga headgear has hurt the sentiments of not only the Naga people but the whole of North East in general, the Governor said. The entire region is, as the rest of the country, proud of its rich culture and traditions, he maintained during an Editor’s meet here at Raj Bhavan Kohima.

Such a statement from a highly qualified person, who also represented the people of India, is extremely regrettable and unacceptable, Acharya said, adding that “the respected Member of Parliament must apologise to the people of Nagaland in particular and the Nation in general.”

“Nagaland is a State of rich heritage and culture and the country is proud of the colourful traditional attire of Nagaland,” he said.
