Citizens of Chessore town in Tuensang district have much to rejoice following the long-awaited ‘Urban Station Committee’ was formally inaugurated at Chessore town on Friday, January 5.

With the inauguration, Chessore town is now the fifth town in the state to be declared as Urban Station Committee Areas.

Earlier, the Government of Nagaland in a notification dated August 17, 2016, as per Section 5 of the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2001, declared Tzudikong, Chuchuyimlang, Athibung, Yisemong and Chessore, as Urban Station Committee Areas.

Advisor, Labour & Employment, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, R Tohanba, inaugurated the urban station in presence of district administration, public leaders, elders and citizens of Chessore sub-division.

Addressing a public gathering after the inauguration, Tohanba said with the inauguration of urban station, citizens of Chessore town would witness a sea of change in terms of development of trade and business, town management and hygiene.

He said the urban stations as per the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2001, is a novel experiment on how the citizens can run and manage their own towns with the supervision and guidance of district administration.

Tohanba said though members of the urban bodies would be nominated and not elected, their responsibilities would be in a way similar to those elected members of town councils as they have to formulate rules and regulations on business and trade license, sanitation and other developmental aspects.

He further expressed optimism that the urban stations declared under the chief ministership of TR Zeliang would go a long way in fulfilling the aspirations and urban facilities of citizens living in smaller towns in Nagaland.

EAC Shamator, Limakhumla Pongener said urban stations would look after the developmental aspects of towns with a population ranging from 1,000 to 5,000. She said Urban Stations would be headed by SDO (C) of the respective town as chairperson and nominated members would include public leaders, elders and others.

Head GB Chessore village, Nokrenba, and president, NPF 38 Shamator-Chessore A/C, Tokiu, also spoke on the occasion.

Vice chairman, Adhoc Town Council Chessore, C Kecham, chaired the inauguration programme.
