Congress legislator, Kh Joykishan, who has been taking part in the demand for justice in the controversial death of a 12-year-old girl student in her hostel room, announced on Monday to stay away from participating in the Independence Day celebration on August 15.

12-year-old student N Babysana of Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School was found dead by hanging in her hostel dormitory on July 18 last.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, the Congress MLA representing the Thangmeiband assemlby constituency, the epicentre of current agitations demanding justice for the deceased student, said that if the state government fails to release the leaders and members of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed in connection with the controversial death of the student, he will not participate in the Independence Day celebration.

As many as 12 members of the JAC including its convener are currently in the judicial custody. The police arrested two of them during crackdown against the JAC members while the remaining 10 were picked up later.

The opposition MLA further protested against the "government’s attitude" while dealing with the case.

The opposition MLA alleged that the way the state government deals with the people "crying for justice" to the controversial death of the 12-year-old student is complete violation of rights of the citizens. He further said that as a legislator, he has been participating in the Independence Day celebration every year despite boycotts and general strikes by insurgent groups considering the importance of the day as a citizen of the country.

"The silence of the government and arresting the protestors who were crying for justice was complete violation of the citizens' rights and making the state more like a dictatorship or under an emergency", he said.
