Some of those who voted Yes had this to say:
• Given the limitations and that the Nagaland state governments (both present and past) are not doing sufficient for the welfare of education, it’s a wonder that some of the educational institutions have not only survived but have done extremely well. The same however cannot be said for most of the institutions that we have.
• In Nagaland there are three kinds of educational institutions – government run, than private institutions whose primary objective is higher learning, and then another set of private institutions whose main intention is to make profit. It is not fair to categorize all of them in the same bracket or to even generalize them. The government run and those private institutions whose focus on making profits are way below par and infact most of them should be shut down. But in the case of those private institutions that strive for higher learning, they have set high standards and have really improved over the years. If education is to improve than those institutions who are not meeting basic standards should be shut down.
• Some of them have definitely made their mark in higher education in Nagaland
Some of those who voted NO had this to say:
• Any institution is graded by the experiences of the teaching faculty. But sadly in our state, one need not be qualified to become a teacher. It has come to a juncture that the Education dept. cannot even pay the salaries to the teachers. How many of these bogus teachers are drawing their salaries without even going to the schools they are appointed. The dept have come to a lot of criticism of late, but it is not able to check the influx of bogus teachers. With the system so corrupted, we cannot expect good standards in our schools and colleges. Its high time, the system is changed.
• Just look at NU. Pathetic!!!
• No, the standard of education is not at all satisfying. Just look at the quality of students that are passing out. One just cannot blame the students, its the methodology that is terribly wrong and lacking. At the same time there is much change needed in the curriculum. Its high time that something is done to improve higher education in Nagaland.
• No. There's no dedication on the part of policy maker, teacher as well as the student to strive to a greater height. This is one of the reason why we have the problem of unemployment in the state. If this is not true, we have to introspect and find out the means to remedy the problem.
• Education system in Nagaland is also corrupted to the core. Unless a mighty revolution takes place, our children will go down to the drain. The standard will go up only when all those non-qualified teachers from all spheres are removed.
• We lack the basic infrastructure and syllabus of different subject.
• Why Rio is developing only in Kohima? if he have concern for all Nagas he should develop in Dimapur.
• Not at all. The rampant appointments of bogus teachers have infected the education system in Nagaland. The noble and dedicated profession has become a joke. Thanks to our education deptt.
• Education system in Nagaland have come to point where corruption has infested the whole system. Starting with the bogus appointments, substitute teachers. We have no way to give quality education to our children. Correct the system, then only our people will be satisfied with the standard of education.
• Why is that our education system had failed. Why is there corruption everywhere? The standard of our teaching faculty hasn’t improved but its going from bad to worse.
• Am afraid all the Nagas will agree with me about the quality and standards of our govt. schools and colleges. It is seen esp. in the schools where there is hardly a rooftop. The school premises been completely neglected and left to the nature for destruction. How many of those will be lying rotten in the interior villages. Think about the standard of education it will provide.
• Corruption has infested the education system in Nagaland. Starting from the bureaucrats to appointment of bogus teachers the virtue of a noble teaching profession has come to a shameless situation where any Tom, Dick and Harry is a teacher who never teaches in classrooms but drawing away their salaries.
• Those days in schools are missed. The administration was good then. The politics was not involved in any way. The quality of teachers and the product of students were excellent. But look at the present scenario. The politiking even to the extent of appointing a chowkidar in schools and colleges leaving aside the bogus appointment of teachers is killing the standard of students. The schools have become a means of livelihoods for many bogus teachers.
• No, people who can afford a ‘better’ education go to places like Shillong, Delhi, etc. Why, because the system here sucks.
Some of those who voted Others had this to say:
• Much can be done to improve the standard of education.
• Most of the politicians, bureaucrats, business people sent their kids outside of Nagaland to study. So obviously there is a huge vacuum here which needs to be filled up. If only the people in power sent their kids to study in Nagaland, the system will get better
• I don’t think a fair poll can be made unless we classify the educational institutions. There are some that are really good and some that should just be closed down. But overall, the approach to education in Nagaland still needs much improvement. There is a lack of vision and the government does not seem to recognize the importance of education. Overall there is lack of direction that is why so many institutions are mushrooming. A must more stringent policy is needed in terms of issuing license.
• Education is very important to the Nagas, but the system needs much changes. Unless the system improves and the public can trust the education system, the state of affairs will only go down. So many Nagas go out to study, and with that much of the state’s resources also go to other states. What is needed is a proper policy which focuses on building the infrastructure of institutions and improving the methodology of teaching.
