The COVID-19 graph in Nagaland dipped further for the fifth consecutive week. As per the weekly COVID roundup released by the state Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) on March 5, detection of new cases dropped by 60 percent from the previous week.

As opposed to 55 cases reported the previous week, the tally for the 7-day period (February 26-March 4) was 22 new cases. There was also a marked dip in the sample positivity rate, falling from 1.9 percent to 1 percent. The IDSP added, “The sample positivity rate has remained below 5 percent for the last two weeks.”

Further, the month-wise data of detection stated that 1003 cases were recorded in February against 2203 cases recorded in January.

The drop in detection was marked by 3 more deaths (Dimapur-2, Kohima-1). According to the IDSP, all three deceased victims had “associated co-morbidities” and only one was found to be vaccinated.  Reiterating the significance of vaccine as a life-saving measure from COVID, it said, “Vaccination of high-risk groups remain the most important preventive measure against hospitalization or death.” 6 new admissions were recorded from COVID-19 hospitals.

The total vaccine doses administered rose to 15.56 lakh, including 22,766 shots of the precautionary third dose. A total of 85,325 doses have been administered in the 15-18 years age group.

The IDSP said, “Vaccines are working very well against hospitalizations and deaths, but effectiveness decreases over time. Hence, 3rd dose is recommended for those at high risk- 60 plus elderly with comorbidities and healthcare/frontline workers after 9 months of 2nd dose.”
