Dear Readers, these are some of the practical measures and concrete steps the Government of Nagaland can initiate to address the issue of the ground water levels reportedly declining in Nagaland

•    High time to form a task force with subject matter specialists and make concrete recommendations. It is a scary situation.

•    Recharging ground water will help greatly.

•    Promote rainwater harvesting.

•    The most important point to be noted is forest cover, because vegetation plays the most vital role to retain ground water for a long period of time as well as water cycle in nature. Why is ground water decreasing? It is mainly due to deforestation for development purposes, if tree is being cut down in that area, we will see the enormous changes on soil structure leading to lower water holding capacity due to dryness and repeat evaporation than percolation into the soil. Afforestation with close attention on water basins and watersheds management is the only solution. Presently, Kohima are receiving water mostly from Mt Japfü which is a main source for Züdza and Zü river tributaries of Dhansiri & Doyang River. If the water basins or watershed is disturbed, the whole major water bodies will also be impacted badly. And as per my observation during my field study, I am seeing forest is getting scattered rather than dense around Japfü range which is a serious problem and need immediate management etc etc

•    Use water logging from across the state.

•    Utilise spring water.

•    Build reservoirs for rain water collection to recharge ground water level.

•    It's time the government makes rules and implementation for stopping rampant boring of water especially for commercial sectors and limit them for household purpose so as well, secondly awareness should be made to plant trees. I hope that will suffice our problems.

•    #RainWaterHarvesting

•    Every jurisdiction needs to build a reservoir and implement piped water supply system ASAP.

•    Understand how ground water has been in abundance since ages past, figure out what went wrong in the cycle and fix it.

•    Don't build boring underground. Water is drying up very quickly

•    Subsidies from government for rain water harvesting above 5000 litre capacity.

•    Water will be more expensive than petrol in the future.

•    Ok, let me share what I know: 1. some rivers, streams, and ponds are overflowing without proper usage even though we can able to use it sufficiently in some areas it is because of the lack of tanks and pipeline and others reasons. So for this, we have to be creative enough to use the flowing water. 2. Make tanks and other traditional ways to harvest water during monsoon season. 3. Awareness (Seminar, journal, and articles) should be given to the general public by the govt. 4. Schools and educational institutions should teach the students about Climate Change awareness. 5. Funds should use properly for the benefit of the present generation as well as the future generation. “Shortage of any natural resources is caused by the human satisfaction”

•    Tree roots play a major role in holding water in its capillary fringes and also keeping groundwater at bay from seepage or percolation. Planting more trees in possible town areas as well as residential area will greatly help holding GWL and enhance rainfall.

•     Adopt regulators in water sector; Regulate and control developmental activities; Behavioural change by promoting awareness to infrastructure building; Wise water use campaigns in villages, towns and cities; Individual and community rain water harvesting practices; Efficient irrigation water use; Proper crop selection; Afforestation & plantation in all suitable areas including in forest reserve, along the rivers and highways, near water bodies and their protection; Should change the habits of misuse of water in day to day activities; Water efficient gadgets & fixtures like energy smart meters for showers, smart sprinkler, tap-n-flush for small & large flush etc; Include research and heavy engineering solutions to enhance efficiency, waste water treatment, reuse, and recycle water.

•    Restrict concrete flooring. Prevent sand and stone mining in the rivers. Encourage ground water refilling during monsoons. Plant trees at the road site, office compounds, wastelands etc.

•    For future, afforestation is must in every corner of the society which is affordable even to the grass root level.

•    Expert committee with regard to serious issues of declining water table/ground water, landslides, low yield of crops, low quality of livestock etc etc is needed and required ASAP.

•    Grey water recycling, recharge of ground water with rain water and grey water, effective rain water harvesting.

•    Groundwater depletion is a serious threat to the environment. Solution!! 1. As individuals, one of the things we can do to make a difference is to use less water for luxury purposes; 2. We should reduce our use of chemicals and dispose of them properly; 3. More comprehensive research and additional funding can help with groundwater depletion; 4. One of the most effective ways to address the issue of groundwater depletion is to find alternative sources of water; 5. The pumping of groundwater should be regulated.
