Dimapur, October 13 (MExN): An open mic event under the theme ‘mental health matters’ was organised collaboratively by Carl Rogers Institute of Mental Health and School Counselling (CRIMHSC), Kohima and Mental Health Mentors, Students’ Well-being and Peer Counselling Committee of St John College (SJC), Dimapur on October 11.

The event was attended by all the students and teachers of SJC. The welcome address was delivered by Peter Banks, Administrative Head, SJC. It was followed by skit, motivational speech, poem recitation, storytelling and musical performances by the students, all addressing the theme of the programme.

Daewon Nongrem, founder of Mental Health Mentors and Sports Psychologist with the Department of Youth Resources and Sports, Kohima and Kezhazolie Cornelius Mere, Chairman, CRIMHSC were the resource persons and moderators for the sessions.

In his keynote speech, Nongrem highlighted the stigmas associated with mental illnesses and how it prevents people living with such illnesses from seeking help. His interactions with the audience helped to reveal many of the misconceptions associated with mental health which he subsequently cleared. He also gave certain tasks to the audience which kept the session interactive and engaging.

Kezhazolie explained the importance of reaching out for professional help when one is known to have mental illness. He explained the main symptoms of mental illnesses which are helpful in identifying people living with mental illnesses.

During the question-and-answer session, the resource persons responded to the students.
