DMC to collect sanitary tax from 2006

DIMAPUR, NOV 29 (MExN): Starting from New Year’s Day next year, the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) will be levying Residential Sanitary Tax (RST) at the monthly rate of Rs 10 per household. The decision was arrived at during the DMC board meeting held today.

“In the interest of the public and proper channelisation of revenue, the Board deliberated at length the current policy of Residential Sanitary Tax which has never been amended since its introduction in 1964,” a release issued by DMC Chairman Y Vikheho Awomi said.  As per unanimous consensus and prior intimation to the GBs/ Council Chairmen, only the DMC members of all 23 Wards under the jurisdiction of the municipality will be entrusted for collection of RST.

The receipt for collection of the tax will be issued by the office of the DMC. 30% of the total amount collected from each ward has been earmarked as salary to the collector(s) while the remaining 70% is to be utilized for sanitary developmental activities. “Depending upon the amount of RST collected from each ward, the concerned ward member may put up proposals for various sanitary developmental activities in their respective wards through the DMC Planning and Development Committee,” Awomi said.

All GBs/Council Chairmen under the jurisdiction of the municipality have been directed to hand over the receipts issued earlier by the then Dimapur Town Council along with pending payments, if any, to the DMC office on or before December 31. Acknowledgement slips will have to be attained from the Council office thereafter as proof of payment/submission.

As per an order passed on July 30, 2004 by Beiu Angami, former DTC Administrative Officer, GBs/Council Chairmen had been empowered to collect RST.

Meanwhile, all DMC members have been asked to submit the name(s), necessary particulars and three passport sized photographs of the collector(s) whom they wish to recommend so that identity cards can be issued.

Collectors will function purely on temporary basis and can in no way claim to be regular or official staff of the DMC. They will also have to be bonafide residents of the particular ward where they are authorized to collect RST.
