Do you think that unemployability of college graduates is due to mediocrity in higher education? Why?

Some of those who voted YES had this to say:

• Yes. Without a second thought. Our education system is pathetic and does not prepare us for the real life. Our teachers force us to memorize notes and nothing more.

• Yes. We live in a world of creativity and knowledge. But our education system here is outdated. They don’t bring out the best in students.

• Yes. Talk about proxy teaching and so on. Our education system is plagued with lots of unhealthy practices.

• Yes. The education system only helps in sitting for competitive exams. Beyond that it has not helped at all.

Some of those who voted NO had this to say:

• No. People have still failed to see where the real problem lies in education. Pointing fingers only to high schools looking at HSLC results. Primary section needs drastic changes and higher education needs drastic overhaul. Higher education does not produce any professional students. Govt needs to immediately focus on higher education

• No, it's mostly a lack of motivation and discipline and a bad foundation in school! College is just stamping in a lengthier version of what basics you learned in school! Unless basic school education is greatly improved when children are still sponges, productive citizens will be at a rare rate! To be good you don't need fancy gadgets and equipments only but dedicated bright teachers and creative freedom! That should seal the deal! The best and brightest should become school teachers and they should be paid really really well and selection to this job made very hard too! Right now it's the opposite!

Some of those who voted OTHERS had this to say:

• My thoughts on it is premised upon a completely different paradigm -- may sound hilarious. What is education? Ancient education system was not institutionalised (in a way). The ancient education system was based on 3 basic principles: Purely Vocational, Philosophy, discipline and morality. Education evolved over time: More spheres of studies were added to the curriculum like mechanical, modern medicines, aeronautics etc; the evolution corresponds to our growing needs. Our education is institutionalised today. To me, education can serve only 2 purposes -- to make the life for humans better, and to quench our thirst for knowledge. I find it illogical when one aspires to be in the civil administration and pursues Science or Commerce. However, as long as today's EDUCATION serves our wellbeing, there shouldn't be any problem. Anyone can define education with the aim of serving the targeted purpose.
