Doctors meet to tackle extortion notices

DIMAPUR: A meeting of doctors was held at the Metro Hospital today to discuss issues arising out of the extortion notices sent allegedly by the NSCN (K) to several prominent medical officers and doctors in Dimapur. According to sources, the meeting resolved to send a letter to the General Secretary NSCN (K), Finance Kilonser as well as a reference to the Town Command. Initial information received stated that the letter being drafted contained references to earlier assurance given by the faction that the medical fraternity including Doctors and nurses would be ‘exempted’ from taxes or extortion notices. According to information the meeting had also discussed what was referred as a tacit understanding the NSCN (K) had given surety that no “donations” of any sort would be demanded from the doctors.” Sources also said that rivals NSCN (IM) had also, at one point of time verbally assured a section of the medical fraternity of exemption from any form of taxes.  

It is reported that apart from several prominent doctors of Dimapur who were served with extortion notices with demands ranging from Rupees 1 - 3 Lakhs, the owner of the Metro Hospital building, proprietor of the Breeze restaurant/store and two other businessmen from Dimapur dealing in Maruti motor works were served with extortion notices reportedly by the NSCN (K). Sources said that the number of people served with ‘National Taxes Notifications’ is actually believed to  be higher. A number of private medical/nursing institution owners are also reported to have received demand notes. The “mass”  notices were received more or less within a specific span of one week , that from the same faction.
