DIMAPUR: In the aftermath of some medical doctors being served with extortion notices by a particular underground faction, it is learnt that the General Practioners Association, Dimapur after thorough deliberations at Metro Hospital on October 18 has resolved not to pay the demanded amount.

According to sources the doctors organization representing all general practioners including dentists, at the meeting attended by all its members, decided not to concede to the demands of the faction on the plea that the medical fraternity was given assurance by the underground organizations that they would be exempted from making donations or to be served with demand/extortion notices. It was also disclosed that the general practioners had already submitted a letter to the Finance Secretary and concerned Kilonser (Minister) of the faction which had issued the demand letters. The contents of the letter was not immediately known but it is understood that the association had made a plea-ground to the faction reminding of the assurances made earlier to the medical fraternity exempting them from being subject to monetary demands in any form.

It is understood that the doctors are hoping for an amicable solution based on understanding and ‘dignified resolve’ to settle the issue. According to sources the last time a section of the medical fraternity was served with demand notes by the undergrounds was way back the year 2000. In the later years, the factions had reportedly in both verbally and written assurances exempted those engaged in the medical profession from paying ‘any tax or demands’.
