Nagaland University Students’ Union commemorates Silver Jubilee

Lumami, May 8 (MExN): The Nagaland University Students’ Union (NUSU) commemorated its Silver Jubilee celebration under the theme “Legacy of Excellence: 25th year of Triumph” at I Ihoshe Kinimi Hall, Lumami on May 7. 

Former Chief Minister of Nagaland and former Governor of Odisha, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa, Dr SC Jamir, graced the occasion as the chief guest, “emphasizing the pressing issue of the Naga political problem and the genesis of the Naga political movement under the unified banner of the Naga National Council.”

A press release from the university stated that Dr Jamir highlighted the “pure ideology, clear vision of goals, and definitive notions of people’s interest and growth characterised by the NNC” and also lamented the present political scenario in Naga society, describing it as a “pitiful and shameful caricature of the vision, ideals, and beliefs of the founding fathers.” The current political landscape in Nagaland vividly reflects the adage, “a blind man leads the other blind men,” he said.

Jamir observed that despite the evolution of today’s world, the minds of Naga leaders remain entrenched in the past, highlighting the necessity for the younger generation to adopt a different mindset, one that is forward-thinking and not fixated on historical grievances.

He further expressed that the Nagas are currently divided, primarily engaging in mutual criticism. He urged them to engage in introspection and retrospection, advising against relentless criticism of the government, and instead, advocated for forgiveness and unity among their own people.

He encouraged the younger generations to refrain from blindly following leaders fixated on the past, urging them instead to analyze, examine, and constructively shape a new future for the Nagas. He emphasized the importance of speaking truth and following one’s convictions, highlighting the enlightenment of youth and advocating for a transformative approach, waging a righteous battle with the weapons of love, reconciliation, and unity.

Prof Jagadish Patnaik, Vice Chancellor, Nagaland University congratulated NUSU on the occasion of Silver Jubilee celebration. Bringing the analogy of a growing child, he lauded the capacity of youth which is also growing in energy and potentiality. He expressed great optimism as he said, “Nagaland is moving ahead, so does the Nagaland University” since the narrative is changing with the changing dimensions of a growing, developed Nagaland. 

Prof Jagadish Patnaik VC exhorted all the youth to contribute in the development of this nation, as India has the tremendous potential in terms of youth energy. The Vice Chancellor hoped that with continued effort, students can excel in their life and bring laurels to the Nagaland University and the state. 

In his note of achievement, Chubalemba Chang, former President of NUSU(L) UPSC and CSE Rank holder, emphasised Nagaland University’s significant contribution to his education, inclusive learning, and leadership skills, highlighting his two years there as pivotal. He underscored the challenges and sacrifices inherent in his UPSC journey, reflecting on the past five years’ lessons in humility and patience, advocating for perseverance and consistency as pathways to success. Furthermore, he urged students to embrace responsibility and actively contribute to the University’s welfare and advancement.

Further, the chief guest released the Jubilee Souvenir along in the presence of Vice Chancellor, DSW and NUSU officials.
Earlier, the choir presented the Jubilee song ‘Legacy of Excellence’. Imkongwapang and Himatoli compered the occasion, welcome address was delivered by Khotai, President NUSU and vote of thanks by Kahoshe Sumi, Deputy Registrar.
