Economic independence paramount: JD (U)

DIMAPUR, APRIL 27 (MExN): While expressing solidarity to the Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI), the Nagaland unit of Janata Dal (U) has urged upon the Naga society to abstain from taking the attitude of “wait and watch” but come out to the open to fight the menace of unabated extortion/taxation.

“The manner in which the CNCCI is vending out its frustration in the form of business shut down is a clear ‘writing on the wall’ that it is willing to give up its meagre business profit and let go the lion-share to those gun-toting groups or faction in the name of Naga nationalism,” the JD (U) media and publicity cell said in its statement.

Stating that mass uprising is required to confront the situation, the JD (U) pointed out that merely leaving it to the Government and the law enforcing agencies will be disastrous as already seen over the years, the lack of political will to contain the unabated extortion in guise of taxation for Naga political cause.

“Such complacency has only resulted in the mushrooming of various underground groups with high sounding Naga political statements but intended only to use themselves as an industry or otherwise a money minting machine,” it went on to state.

Such groups’ looks upon the business establishment as an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) for which the CNCCI has taken upon the cudgel in the form of closure of business establishment, the JD (U) further stated.

Asserting that economic independence is paramount to political independence, the JD (U) said if the growth of Naga economy is hampered, then the very meaning and principle of the Naga political movement will be defeated.

Patriotism does not protrude its heads in the form of palatial building and SUVs during the course of the journey towards independence, it sought to point out.
