JD (U) urges centre to reconsider scrapping FMR

DIMAPUR, JANUARY 24 (MExN): The Janata Dal (United) Nagaland State Unit has viewed that the sudden termination of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) by the Government of India is tantamount to creating barriers amongst the same fraternity which will lead to disparities and hinder free flow of ideas, people and resources.

In a press statement, the JDU maintained that the FMR has played a crucial role in promoting cultural exchange and regional integration between two nations.

While stating that the decision to scrap the FMR appears to have been made without sufficient public consultation or transparent discourse, the JDU said the abrupt termination of this age-old established and seasoned convention for ‘Free Movement’ raises questions about the impact on communities and individuals who have benefitted from the ease of movement across borders.

In this connection, the JDU has urged the central government to reconsider its decision, taking into account the potential consequences on bilateral relations and the longstanding connections between the people of India and Myanmar.

It advocated for a collaborative approach that involves open dialogue with the public, considering diverse perspectives, and seeking alternative solutions that address concerns without compromising the principles of free movement.

We believe that through inclusive decision-making, we can find solutions that are in the best interest and uphold the spirit of unity and inclusiveness that our party stands for,” the press statement read.
