Kohima: Most cases referred to Childline on child labour were domestic workers

Oriental College, Kohima in collaboration with Childline, Kohima, Nagaland observed World Day against Child Labour by organizing an awareness programme in the college auditorium under the theme ‘Social justice for all. End child labour.’

Neingu Kulnu, Coordinator, Childline, Kohima while speaking as resource person said, although there was no specific categories to demarcate child labour in the state, most of the cases that has been referred to the Childline on child labour were domestic workers or minor children working as domestic homes. 

She however expressed that people are becoming more aware of child rights and has come out to report against abuses in recent times given the fact that incidents have been brought to light in media platforms and other forums. 

As part of the awareness, Kulnu asked the gathering present to report to the Childline anytime incase one comes across any form of abuse on children. 

During the programme, Drama Club of the college presented a drama on 'My nextdoor neighbour.' 

The act depicted a child being abused by a husband and wife who has taken the boy on the pretext of sending him to school. However, his basic rights are denied to him. The neighbour who is reluctant to act against the duo finally reports to the 'Childline.' Thereafter, the child is freed from them and the couple are given punishment as per the law
