Nagaland launches next leg of MMC on HIV/AIDS

Kohima | August 12 : Buoyed by the positive impact generated from the last multi media campaign- a red ribbon superstar campaign on HIV and AIDS, Nagaland once again launched the next leg of Multi-Media Campaign 2011-12 at the function held here today at The Heritage. This year’s campaign features some innovative event like printing of Christmas cards with HIV and AIDS message including the increase in prize money for musical event.
The campaign will start from this month and continue till the last week of January 2012. It has been designed, capitalizing on the popularity of local entertainment avenues targeting the youth in the age group of 18 to 30 years with the theme “Awareness, Compassion, Education and Support” for the issue of HIV and AIDS in the state.
Menukhol John, commissioner and secretary for health & family welfare told the media persons that the campaign will comprise four chapters. It includes; awareness through Inter Personal Communication (IPC), awareness through sports, music and festival platforms.
He said the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) was appreciative of the state’s activity on MMC and told other states to follow the step of Nagaland.
The objective of the campaign for 2011-12 is to ensure greater visibility for the issue of HIV/AIDS, encourage safe and responsible behaviour among the youth, reduce the level of stigma and discrimination by demystifying HIV/AIDS, promote HIV and AIDS related services and increase general awareness about HIV and AIDS.
Under awareness campaign through interpersonal communication, it has set the master trainers for different women organizations as follows; Pochury- from 29 villages (August 22 to 23), Phom- from 25 villages (August 25 to 26), Chang- from 27 villages (September 2nd week) and Sangtam- September 3rd week.
In sports, the campaign will use the platform of Classic Cup football tournament starting from August 18, 12th NSF Martyrs Cup Football tournament (September to October), Noke Trophy Football tournament (October), Royal Gold Cup (November) and T20 Cricket tournament (January 2012). Topics to be disseminated through these platforms include; prevention and HIV testing, care, support and treatment, stigma and discrimination, basic of AIDS and services available.
This time round the music event has been changed to NSACS’ Rock Aware with the key message “AIDS is our problem. We Care.”
District level competition will kick off from Kohima by September 10 and the district winner would compete for grand finale in Dimapur on October 15. The prize money at the district level has been enhanced to Rs. 20,000 for each district sponsored by Legislator Forum on AIDS.
RockAware sponsors for individual category include; Audio Garage- vocal mic to best vocalist, Unitex Inc- Acoustic Guitar to best guitarist, Dream Café & Wishing well foundation- Cymbal set to best drummer, Crescendo- bass practice combo to best bassists, Neo Vision- Home theater speaker sets for all four individual winners.
Under awareness through festival, IEC stall will be set up at Hornbill Festival with various activities which would help in disseminating the message of HIV and AIDS. It would also mobilize Red Ribbon Club in all the districts and printing of Christmas Cards with HIV and AIDS message.
