PHED launches Water Quality Status Survey

Kohima, April 6 (MExN): A one day Training cum Orientation Workshop for conduct of survey on status of Water Quality in rural habitations in the State organized by Water & Sanitation Support Organization (W.S.S.O.) PHED was held on April 6, 2011 at PHED Conference Hall, Kohima. The Department has launched the survey for establishing a Statewide water quality data base of rural habitations  with the ultimate objective of  supporting the  ongoing  initiatives for ensuring  safe drinking water  security at household  level  in the State. Senior field level Officers from all districts including the Department’s Chemists and Lab. Assistants attended the workshop.
Chief Engineer PHED, Er. Mhondamo Ovung, who delivered the keynote address stressed on the importance of safe water, which is vital for all forms of life and yet which is at the same time a scarce and precious resource, which can become a thing more preferable than gold or money. He  stated that it has been a long felt need of the Department  for  establishing  a proper  data base  of water quality  and  elaborated on the Department’s  initiative  for generating a Statewide water quality Data Base.  The Director W.S.S.O., PHED, Er. Kevisekho Kruse stated that as per  WHO report-  “ Bad Water kills more people than that by Wars, Malaria, HIV/AIDS and Traffic accidents combined ” and also went on to state that  an  estimated  proportion of  upto half of all hospital beds in the world are occupied by victims of water contamination. He elaborated on the Government of India’s requirements regarding the implementation of the Water Quality Monitoring & Surveillance under National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP) and addressed on vital issues concerning the survey being launched by the Department.
The Superintending Engineer, PHED Circle Kohima Circle – II, Er. Repang Longkumer explained the detailed procedures to be followed for conduct of the survey while the Chemist Ravolezo Punyü highlighted on procedures for sample collection, testing, etc. The workshop was chaired by the Additional Chief Engineer PHED, Er. K.G. Sumi and ended with the vote of thanks and concluding remarks pronounced by Er. J.Walter Longchar Superintending Engineer (M& I) PHED.
