Through gender budgeting, the state’s Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) encourages participation of women in planning and management of rural water supply and sanitation programmes.

The department initiates involvement and participation of womenfolk and women NGOs in awareness campaign “since they are the most affected section in society in matters concerning water and sanitation.” This was stated in Annual Administrative Report 2021-222 of PHED tabled at the recently concluded 11th session of Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) here. “By providing drinking water and sanitation facilities through various programmes and plans, quality of life for women in many rural habitations are improved,” the report claimed. They are no longer need to walk long distances to fetch water and are in a better position to devote more time to other activities, the report added.
