For the purpose of maintaining a clean and healthier environment in Dimapur, a short awareness programme on waste management was organised for the shopkeepers, traders and members of Kuki Church under Zakiesatuo colony and Public ground on April 6.

The programme was held at Zakiesatuo Hr Secondary School led by the initiative of environmental activist, Ronika Miachieo and Chief Manager of Solid Waste Management, Amos Ezung in collaboration with the aforementioned colony council chairpersons and secretaries.

Amos Ezung gave comprehensive instructions to the people in attendance, to segregate their wastes and also to clean and maintain the area around their shops. He further reminded them not to throw their garbage on the road side or into drainages as it creates health and sanitary issues for the whole community. Additionally, he also pointed out that the habit of spitting after chewing tobacco, should be put to a stop if not, fines will be imposed on them by the concerned authorities.

Ronika Miachieo also took the time to request the people to take care of their surroundings and to make Dimapur a model for cleanliness in the near future. She said that in order for this to happen, the people should work hand-in-hand with the municipal authority in all areas of public maintenance. Further adding that, “Doing something good for the betterment of society during our lifetime is never a waste of time and effort,” she said.

On behalf of Zakiesatuo colony council, Zarenthung reminded the people that this awareness programme was a means towards helping them keep their surrounding areas clean at all times. He mentioned that since this part of Dimapur is the gateway of Nagaland, it is the responsibility of the colony members to put up a positive image for all to see. Adding that the colony council will conduct surprise checking occasionally, and for those found flouting the norms the council will impose fines on them.

The team responsible for the entire initiative also mentioned how they are converting the dumping zone area outside the gates of Kuki church, into a beautified are and therefore reminded the people not to throw their wastes there in the future.

On a side note, 62 million tonnes of wastes are generated annually across the county. Out of which, 5.6 million tonnes is purely plastic waste. It is also expected that waste generation will further increase to about 165 million tonnes by 2030.
