Unions clarifies on origin of AASSU

Dimapur, July 13 (MExN): The Longmatra Area Students’ Union (LASU), in the interest of the student community has made a clarification on the press statements issued by various students union over USSC issue.

LASU, Vice President, Jumushen in the clarification note said that the federating Unit members of the USSC excluding USSC officials during its meeting held on January 27, 2009 at Kiphire decided not to extend cooperation to the USSC due to the reason best known to them. The unit members appealed to its apex body USSC several times over the issue of consideration but remained mute and attended by its apex body.

The federating unit again held a joint meeting under the chairmanship of Khatomong Justin on the same issue at DUDA Guest House on June 20, 2009 which was attended by all the presidents of Sangtam Area Students’ Union from Longkhim-Chari Division and Kiphire District. The meeting resolved to re-affirm its earlier decision which was held on February 27, 2009. The unit members also declared that the resolution adopted during the USSC 3rd Presidential meeting held on May 24, 2009 shall not be accepted since it was decided without its units.

However, the Vice President further added that the question of formation or existence of separate body like AASSU under Sangtam community doesn’t arise as alleged and have not discussed at the meeting. Therefore, it is to clarify for once and for all that, there is no organization/Union like AASSU initiated by area students union under Longkhim-Chari and Kiphire District. “In this connection, any organization or individual should not opt for cheap press release without knowing the issue clearly, which will easily mislead the people,” the statement further added.

Further, the Seyochung Area Students’ Union (SASU) also stated that the question for the existence of the so called All Area Sangtam Students’ Union does not arise.

However, the joint consultative meeting of Area Students’ Union at Kiphire district and Longkhim division was held on February 27, 2009, April 30, 2009 and June 20, 2009 to address the all areas grievances to the apex body USSC. “So to conduct any meetings, there must have a chairperson to lead the meeting systematically. So the house selected Justine Khatomong as seasonal chairperson for the said meeting,” Lichumse Jinger, President, SASU stated.

The Union also added that some local units going through the press release without knowing the grievances of the Area Units for its non co-operation and misleading the public by their cheap publication will held responsible for any further consequences arise.

It also appealed to the USSC to kindly initiate and convene the meeting to sort out a better solution at the earliest before the issue is replicated for the welfare of the students’ community since the platform for the meeting convention vested on the students’ apex body.
