Peren, September 7 (MExN): “Keeping in view the possible ramifications and complications fallout to the customary custodian, the GB nomenclature,” the Peren District Goan Burah Association (PDGBA) has requested the Governor of Nagaland, RN Ravi “to uphold the title and name ‘Goan Burah’ both in the village and town or Rural and Urban with uniformity for efficiency and clear posterity.”
In the matter of the proposed nomenclature alteration of Goan Burah (GB) in urban areas in the State of Nagaland, the Peren District Goan Burah Association (PDGBA) on Tuesday observed that the proposal does not seem to hold merit and any water, “rather it will ramify and complicate the hollowed institutions of GB and its functioning both legally and morally.”
PDGBA in a memorandum submitted to Governor through Deputy Commissioner, Peren said that “the past and present, with the title and name Goan Burah used in the State of Nagaland under Home Department has shown both Constitutional as well as administrative efficiency especially in the aspect of Customary laws and practices endowed in the constitution.”
“The Naga customs and traditions is no way either contradict nor bifurcate rural and urban settlement,” stated the memo appended by PDGBA President Kainia; Secretary Hingtung; Vice President Irangduang and Advisor Kiesenlak.
Asserting that GBs are the backbone of Naga Customary laws and its realization has achieved since inception till today as a grassroot institution of our democracy, PDGBA said, “Developmental level, topographical consideration or otherwise should not be the basis to change nomenclature of GBs, the custodian of our customary law.”
