2 Chakma candidates fielded despite NGO Committee directive

Newmai News Network Aizawl | October 25   Despite the directive served by NGO Coordination Committee, not to field Chakma candidates, a conglomerate of major civil society organizations in Mizoram, the ruling Congress has fielded two candidates belonging to Chakma community for the upcoming assembly polls slated for November 28.   The Congress on Wednesday night released the remaining list of candidates according to which sitting Congress MLA Nihar Kanti Chakma and Amit Kumar Chakma have been fielded in West Tuipui and Tuichawng in “Chakma area” respectively.   The incumbent Speaker Hiphei will contest from Palak and S Hiato has been fielded in Saiha, according to the list of candidates released by the party's general secretary in-charge of the Central Election Committee (CEC), Mukul Wasnik. The Congress had earlier on October 11 released the names of 36 candidates leaving four constituencies- West Tuipui and Tuichawng, both in Chakma area and Saiha and Palak in Mara Autonomous District Council (MADC) blank.   Candidates for West Tuipui and Tuichawng were earlier not announced due to an appeal made by the NGOs not to field any candidates belonging to Chakma community.   The NGO Coordination Committee, which comprised of major civil society organizations and students bodies such as Young Mizo Association (YMA), Mizoram Upa Pawl (MUP) or Mizoram Elders’ Association, Mizo Hmeichhia Insuihkhawm Pawl (MHIP) or Mizo Women Federation, Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) and Mizo Students’ Union (MSU) had appealed to all political parties not to field candidate belonging to Chakma community citing that the “Chakmas are Bangladeshi foreigners” and have no political right to contest election.   Sticking to the appeal, the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), an electoral alliance formed by seven regional parties, has decided not to field Chakma candidates in Chakma area.   However, the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) and BJP are likely to field Chakma candidates, party sources said.   The MNF has already fielded a Mizo candidate Robert Hmingthansanga in West Tuipui. The BJP is likely to field Congress sitting MLA Dr BD Chakma, who recently resigned from the membership of state legislature and joined BJP, in Tuichawng.   President of Central Committee of YMA, Vanlalruata expressed disappointment over Congress fielding two Chakma candidates. Vanlalruata blamed the Congress for “showing disrespect” to the appeal made by the NGO Coordination Committee not to field any candidate belonging to Chakma community. “We can only make appeals to political parties and the choice is at their hands. We have nothing to say if a party fields Chakma candidates by disobeying our appeal,” he said, adding that the NGO Coordination Committee would sit over the issue.
