Assam Governor for welfare of tea garden workers

Guwahati, August 10 (MExN): Governor of Assam, PB Acharya has stated that universities should act as a catalyst and epicenter of knowledge and a centre for societal development.  

Acharya said this during his meeting with the Vice Chancellors of the various universities of Assam and the research scholars along with their guides on the researches carried out in tea gardens and the tea garden workers in Raj Bhawan on August 9.   Acharya said that universities should work for the primary social obligation of strengthening the society through students, faculty members etc. “Mere getting degree is not enough, one should make the right use of the degrees by applying them for social development and social transformation. Reseraches from the laboratory should go to the fields,” he maintained. He urged upon the research scholars to channelize the results of their researches to bolster welfare of the tea garden labourers and the ex-tea garden labourers.   Acharya on the basis of the various indicators made 6 groups. All the Vice Chancellors of the universities have been made the captain of each group. The group members will be the research scholars of the respective universities. Tezpur University has been assigned to discuss on the research carried out in education and culture of the tea garden workers. Similarly, Jorhat Agricultural University has been entrusted with model house, documentation and tribal dialect. Gauhati University has been allotted to work on women in domestic violence and ex-tea gardens, Bodoland University will work on health and sanitation. Dibrugarh University will find reports on entrepreneurship, tea marketing. Assam University will work on social evil and character building. The Governor also requested the universities to prepare the reports and submit within six months for the future course of action.   The Vice Chancellors and the research scholars also presented their expert view points on the research papers carried out on tea garden workers and committed to work diligently in building the society.   VC of Tezpur University, Prof. Mihir Kanti Choudhury, VC of Gauhati University Dr. Mridul Hazarika, VC of Bodoland University Dr. Hemanta Kr. Baruah, VC of Assam Agricultural University Dr. Kamal Malla Bujarbaruah, Assam University VC’s nominee Prof. Parthankar Choudhury, Chandan Kumar Sharma of Tezpur University, research scholars, professors of different universities and a host of other dignitaries were present in the programme.
