Farmers trained on package of practices, protection of crops

Dimapur, December 2 (MExN): All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on vegetable crops, Department of Horticulture, SASRD: NU under TSP (Tribal Sub Plan) conducted farmers’ training on ‘Package of practices of winter vegetable crops’ and ‘Plant protection of vegetable and fruit crops” at adopted village Hekheshe on November 29.  

The objective of the training was to make the farmers aware of the benefits of growing vegetables in their garden to meet their nutritional and family requirement, according to a press release. It also aimed to teach them the right way to grow vegetables, make them aware of the pests and diseases which they might encounter during the cropping season, and importantly to manage the pests and disease with eco-friendly tactics. Some important natural enemies (Farmers friends) and how to identify and preserve them in their field were also highlighted, the release said.  

The Technical Session-I on ‘Package of practices of winter vegetable crops’ was delivered by Dr. Moakala Changkija, Scientist, AICRP (vegetable crops) and Yongkongtula, Sr. Technical Asst. AICRP (vegetable crops) respectively. The Technical Session-II on ‘Plant protection of vegetable and fruit crops’ was delivered by Dr. Waluniba, Scientist, AICRP (vegetable crops) and Kavi Sumi, Scientist, AICRP (pigeon pea).  

Farmers fields were monitored by Dr. Aastik Jha Scientist, AICRP (vegetable crops), where 8 farmers were selected based on their performance for further encouragement.  

Prof. Akali Sema, In-charge TSP-AICRP (vegetable crops) conducted the wrap up session, where organic insecticide, organic micro nutrient and seedlings of vegetable crops were distributed to all the participants and knapsack sprayers were distributed to the selected farmers.  

70 farmers from Hekheshe and Tsüüma villages attended the training.
