IGGL assures safety standards of the North East Gas Project

Expresses willingness to foster open communication with stakeholders

DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 23 (MExN): Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL) has denied allegations by the Angami Youth Organisation (AYO) on implementation of the North East Gas Grid (NEGG) project.

A press release from the IGGL said that awareness Programmesp were organised by the company in association with district administration in Kohima, Chümoukedima, Medziphema, Khehokhu Village, Nihokhu Village, Kikhryi Village and Niuland. IGGL also expressed its willingness to organise more such camps in future and re-emphasized its commitment to transparency and collaboration in addressing the apprehensions expressed by various stakeholders, it added.

The IGGL further informed that the North East Gas Grid Project is being implemented using “state-of-the-art technology with internationally best safety provisions.” “Considering the region’s terrain and topography, rigorous studies including hazard and operability studies and environmental management plan studies, have been conducted to monitor the pipeline's integrity and security during the construction as well as the operations phase ensuring the highest level of safety standards adhering to guidelines set by regulatory bodies such as the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (P&GRB), Oil Industry Safety Directorate (OISD), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and American Petroleum Institute (API),” it explained.

It further stated that IGGL is implementing the Northeast Gas Grid Project in line with the Government of India’s Hydrocarbon vision 2030 for North-East. The pipeline will connect the eight Northeastern states to the National Gas Grid and regional sources.

The IGGL said that with the commissioning of this 1,656 Km long Gas Grid, “industrial and economic growth of the North-Eastern Region is expected to get a significant boost.” The Dimapur-Kohima-Imphal Pipeline, a crucial component of the NEGG Project, is being laid along the Utility Corridor of National Highway (NH-29), with necessary permissions granted by NHIDCL and the support from State Government, it informed.

The IGGL urged stakeholders, the public, and all concerned parties to recognize pipelines as the “safest mode for transporting natural gas.” It emphasized the inherent safety of pipelines compared to LPG tanks and cylinders, pointing out the narrower flammability range of natural gas, low density and its widespread geographic distribution. Additionally, the IGGL highlighted the rapid expansion of gas pipelines across the country, underscoring their “reliability and safety of pipeline in natural gas transport.” Natural gas, as a fast-growing and safe primary energy source, is becoming the fuel of the future, contributing significantly to economic development, it noted.

It sought support from all stakeholders and concerned parties, and expressed commitment to fostering open communication and addressing concerns with the development of the Northeast Gas Grid Project.
