KDLSA raise awareness on Indigenous & Tribal Rights

Kohima, August 10 (MExN): Kohima District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA) in collaboration with District Administration SDO (C) Jakhama observed International Day of the World’s Indigenous People at SDO (C) Jakhama on August 9.

Speaking on role and duties of village authorities in government set up, Alemyapang Longchar, SDO (C) Jakhama pointed out that the Village Council Act 1978 cannot clash with customary law. He explained how VDB should be under the village council, power to exercise loans, maintaining law and order.  

Speaking on Indigenous and Tribal Rights, Zekuseto Natso, Panel Lawyer KDLSA informed that there are various schemes and scholarship for tribal provided by the centre. He said that there are special provisions provided to the tribal under Article 371A.  

Speaking on Adoption and Beneficiaries Scheme, Mego Kielienyü, Legal cum Probation Officer DCPU Kohima said that adoption certificate can be obtained for children below the age of 18 years. He highlighted about the procedures for legal adoption wherein a single or unmarried man cannot adopt a girl child and that documents for adoption or papers is also to be furnished while adopting a child.  

Invocation was pronounced by Siechalie Yhoshü, VCC Kigwema while vote of thanks was pronounced by Hisinlo Himb, Panel Lawyer KDLSA. It was chaired by Keduvi Zhotso, Panel Lawyer KDLSA. This was followed by tree plantation.
