Local community participation needed to preserve, protect wildlife: CL John

DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 4 (MExN): The 69th National Wildlife Week was celebrated in Conference Hall at Nagaland Zoological Park, Rangapahar on October 4, 2023. 

The event was organized in continuation of the week-long celebration with CL John, Minister of Environment, Forest & Climate Change and Village Guards as the guest of honour accompanied by Y Kikheto Sema, Commissioner & Secretary, Department of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Ved Pal Singh, Chief Wildlife Warden, Beizo Suokhrie, DFO Dimapur and other dignitaries from the department.

In his keynote address, the Chief Wildlife Warden shared the need for conservation of wildlife species and its importance, in particular how a small plant from the wild could aid in the manufacture of life-saving drugs used by pharmaceutical industries. 

As this year’s theme mentions “Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation”, the participation of people greatly progress the efforts of the department in saving and protecting the little of what is left in the nature around us, Singh observed. 

Short sharing was presented by students from four participating schools regarding the need for conservation of Tiger, Western Hoolock Gibbon, Mithun and Blyth’s Tragopan. 

Commissioner & Secretary, Sema suggested that a chapter on wildlife conservation should be included in the educational curriculum of the State. Minister for Environment, Forest & Climate Change CL John, in his address, emphasized on the need for participation of local communities in safeguarding the local wildlife and forest resources. 

Asia’s largest tortoise, Asian Giant Tortoise is one of the focal species conserved by the Nagaland Forest Department. The conservation of the species was highlighted by Sushmita Kar, Project Co-ordinator, Turtle Survival Alliance Foundation India where she mentioned how this tortoises help in forest regeneration. 

Additionally, Lansothung Lotha, RFO, Wokha, Hukai Zhimo, Forester-I, Wildlife Dimapur, Y. Limthure Yimchunger, Forest Guard, Kiphire Division and Bhola, Animal Keeper, NZP were felicitated as ‘Conservation Heroes’ of the department. 

The program concluded with a declaration of result and felicitation of the painting competition held earlier on October 2 with The Maple Tree School, Livingstone Foundation International, Hope Academy and Pilgrim Hr. Sec. School.
