Manipur Maoist leader arrested in Patna, brought to Imphal

Top leader of Maoist Communist Party Manipur (MCPM), Sapamcha Kangleipal alias Chiranglen alias Sarat, who was at large since his escaped from judicial custody 11 years ago but arrested recently from Bihar was brought to Imphal on Sunday.

 

Sapamcha Kangleipal was arrested along with two hard-core members of Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) - Peoples’ War Group (PWG) by a joint team of Manipur and Patna police from Hardinge Road near Patna Junction of Bihar on August 8 last.

 

The other arrested members were brought together to Imphal by a team of Manipur after taking transit remand for five days from Patna court.

 

Kangleipal was transported by an Indigo flight that landed in Imphal Airport that landed at around 11 am while two KCP leaders were brought in separate flights arrived later.

 

Kangleipal who the police claimed to be a top leader of the MCPM hailed from Nongada Awang Leikai under Lamlai police station of Imphal East district.

 

He joined the underground group after he escaped from the security ward of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) hospital, Imphal where he was treated for his illness on the intervening night of December 28 and 29, 2008.

 

He was in jail after Manipur police arrested earlier in May of the same year (2008) on the alleged charged of making seditious remark.

 

At that time, he was the president of Manipur Forward Youth Front (MFYF), a civil society organisation working for the cause of human rights protection.

 

The state government detained him under National Security Act (NSA). However, he escaped from the security ward of the same hospital in September 2008.

 

After his escaped, he was declared wanted by the Manipur government.

 

In the later years, he allegedly set up the Maoist Communist Party Manipur (MCPM) and operates the armed group since then.

 

A police source said that he will be produced in the court of Imphal East chief judicial magistrate for necessary police custody on Monday in connection with FIR cases pending against them.

 

While the two other leaders of KCP (PWG) will be produced before the Imphal West chief judicial magistrate in connection with an FIR registered against them by Lamphel PS in May this year.
