Amidst the tightened security measures being taken up in Manipur by the state government to thwart any untoward incident during the celebration of Independence Day on August 15, security forces have arrested two PREPAK (Pro) cadres.

A police press release said on Monday that the two underground cadres belonging to PREPAK (Pro) were arrested by a combined team of Imphal East police commandos and 5 JAK Rifles during a counter insurgency operation at Kongba area on August 9. They identified the arrested "active cadres" of PREPAK (Pro) as RK Lelen alias Kangla alias Sana (27), son of RK Sanatomba of Kongba Kshetri Leikai and Pebam Suresh Singh alias Talung (40), son of P Angangcha of Kwakeithel.

Pebam Suresh Singh was arrested from his house in a follow up action to the disclosure made by RK Lelen, the press release added.

It can be mentioned here that security across the state, particularly in Imphal, is seen tightened up in the last few days against the backdrop of boycott calls given by various insurgent groups to the celebration of the Independence Day in the state.

The tightened security measures are taken up to thwart disruptive activities that are likely to come up from the insurgent groups who boycotted the Independence Day every year, a police source said.

In greater Imphal area, state police force has been conducting mopping operations at sensitive areas on daily basis in the last few days.

On Monday, police conducted mopping operations at various parts of Imphal and its outskirt.

There were no reports of nabbing insurgents during the operations on Monday even though some persons who were unable to produce documents to establish their identities were picked up for further verifications.

The combing operations are being conducted as a part of the precautionary measure to prevent any attempt to foil the Independence Day celebration on August 15 by "anti-social elements", a police official said.

Random frisking and checking operations are also being conducted at sensitive places, particularly along the roads leading to Imphal, the source added.

Every year, almost all underground organizations have been imposing "total shutdown" as part of their boycott to the celebration of Independence Day.
