The ranking of Nagaland University (NU), the sole central university of the State, dropped further in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), while there was a glimmer of hope as Patkai Christian College – Autonomous (PCC) made history by becoming the first college in the State to be listed among top-200 in India.

PCC, the first autonomous college in the North-East, was placed in the rank-band of 151-200 out of 2,746 participating colleges in the NIRF 2023, as announced by the Union Ministry of Education on June 5.

It was the lone educational institution from Nagaland to be featured in the NIRF 2023 India Rankings, which assesses institutions across India in four categories: Overall, University, College, and Research Institutions, along with seven subjects.

Reacting to the results, PCC Principal Dr Thepfuvilie Pierü said that it is a proud moment for the college reflecting unwavering dedication and collective efforts of faculty and staff in imparting high-quality education.

It reinforces Patkai’s mission and commitment to “offer wholesome and value-based quality education” and the college will continue to strive towards holistic development of each and every student enrolled, Dr Pierü added.

Pachhunga University College from Mizoram, the other institutes from the North-East to list in the top-200, also maintained its stellar performance improving its ranking from 45th in 2022 to 34th in 2023.

Meanwhile, NU's performance, however, declined further, falling out of the 151-200 rank band it held in both 2021 and 2022. NU's highest ranking was in 2018, when it reached the top 100 at 95.

The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Nagaland, the state's sole 'Institute of National Importance,' did not witness any improvement in its ranking.

Besides NU, NIT, and PCC, other institutes from Nagaland that participated in NIRF 2023 were St Joseph University, SD Jain Girls College, St. Xavier's College, and Tetso College, as per the ranking portal.
