Seminar on piggery farming at Phek

Kohima, November 9 (MExN): A seminar on piggery farming for RD Block Phek was organized by Chakhesang Public Organization (CPO) in association with DRDA Phek and state’s department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Service at Phek town on November 8 last.  

Speaking on the occasion, Chuba, DPO, DRDA Phek asked the pig farmers to take full advantage of the ban imposed on import of pig by CPO by rearing local pigs on extensive manner.

He assured that the department will extend its fullest support in this venture to boost the rural economy and sustainable livelihood of the rural populace. CPO president Kekhwengulo Lea stated that the CPO imposed ban on import of pig within its jurisdiction since 2000.  

The ban on import of pig since then contributed in term of economic benefit as well as and health ground. He told the pig farmers to actively involve in rearing pig, adding that consumption of locally produced meat amount to safety from epidemic diseases.  

He also asked them to take full advantage of the loan facilities being extended by the financial institutions as well as assistance from the concerned department. Resource person Dr. Rokozo Dolie asked the pig farmers to ensure that hygienic sty is put in place and also provide enough clean drinking water as pig require lots of water.  

He said artificial insemination of pig would play as a big boost for pig farmers in the near future. Another resource person Dr. Kewelelo Mero encouraged the pig farmers to use locally available vegetation for feeding purpose as it comes cheaper. Earlier, Muleto Tunyi APO, DRDA Phek delivered welcome address while Kuhuchiyi, BDO Phek Block chaired the function.
