UNC receives invitation from MHA for tripartite talk

Newmai News Network Imphal | March 18   The United Naga Council (UNC) received a written invitation this evening from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India for tripartite talks involving the Manipur Government, the UNC and the Government of India representatives. The talks will be held over the new district creation issue which triggered the indefinite economic blockade since November 1, 2016.   Sources from the UNC said that the talks will be held on Sunday, March 19, at Senapati district headquarters from 1 pm. The UNC leaders expressed that they will participate in the talks on Sunday.   Meanwhile, the new BJP-led coalition government in Manipur hopes of ending the economic blockade imposed by the United Naga Council (UNC) on national highways connecting Manipur and is set to hold fresh talks with the agitating Naga body tomorrow, Sunday.   The ensuing meeting over the blockade will be the first litmus test for the BJP headed coalition government which hopes to end the economic blockade.   Tripartite talks were earlier held between the Centre, the previous Manipur government and the UNC over the district creation issue, which had ended without any major breakthrough.   The previous Congress government under Okram Ibobi Singh had taken a stand to hold talks over the impasse either in New Delhi or Imphal. On the other hand, the UNC had expressed their desire to hold such meetings either in Senapati district or New Delhi.   However, this time, the BJP government has chosen Senapati as the venue of the upcoming talks.   Biren Singh had announced soon after taking oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of Manipur, “My government’s immediate task would be lifting the UNC-sponsored blockade.”   From the side of the state government, Additional Chief Secretary Dr Suresh Babu and Commissioner (Works) K Radhakumar are likely to take part in the proposed tripartite talks.   A state cabinet meeting held on Friday discussed the issue at length and decided to bring UNC to the negotiating table and end the 137-day long stir launched over the new district creation issue.   The Naga body had insisted earlier that the decision of the district creation should be rolled back or they will not lift the blockade imposed on Manipur’s vital routes—NH-2 and NH-37.
