Dimapur: In the recently concluded Morung Poll on the topic, “How safe is public transport?” a whopping 88% voted against the safety of public transport while 14% said that they were unsure of their stand on the issue. Amazingly, none of the voters were of the opinion that public conveyance was safe. Those who voted ‘Not safe’ had to say that the traffic scene in the cities were in deplorable conditions.

They were also the opinion that drunken driving was one of the major attributes towards the causes of accidents. Some had to say that common sense needed to be imparted to drivers of government buses. One had to say that most drivers have no clue about safety measures and driving ethics.

Another had to say, “selection of a driver is done through the backdoor not taking into account their capacity and determination.” Some voters were off the view that accidents occurred due to the negligible road conditions arising out of corruption practices.  One voter categorically stated that limits on sitting capacity and speed were not implemented, most drivers mix drinking and driving and that there were no strict regulation in the issuing of driving licenses.

He also complained of limited driving tests at the time of issuing licenses. Those who voted ‘unsure’ stated that most often, human beings could control technical failures if they remained alert.

Another voter questioned if there was such a thing as public transport in Nagaland. Another had to say that people did not see the truth behind accidents but blamed each other, the drivers, or the road conditions.
