10 villages receive solar lamps in Phek

Phek, August 19 (MExN): In its effort to protect the forests, Phek Forest Division has distributed solar lamps to ten villages located at the confluence of Tizu river under Phek district in collaboration with Mumbai based NGO, Eco Solutions, which donated the lamps. The 10 villages - Mutsale, Tehephu, Kotisu, Sohomi, Suthotsu, Kizari, Tuzatsu, Khutsokhono, Khuza and Chepoketa - solely depend on forests and its resources for their livelihood thereby putting mounting pressure on the forests. As a result, the Forest Department distributed the lamps with an aim to fill few critical gaps to offset some amount of carbon dioxide that is generated as a result of burning fossil fuel and also to help cut expenses of the villagers on candles and kerosene and to decrease fuel wood consumption.

The lamps were distributed at a programme at Khuza village on August 18, which was attended by the functionaries of the 10 villages and local communities. All the 10 village councils and EAC Khuza Tiayanger Jamir lauded the initiative of DFO Phek, Rongsenlemla Imchen (IFS) and Phek Forest Division in transporting and distributing the lamps personally to each household.

They also expressed gratitude to Yatender Agrawal, Coordinator of Eco Solutions for the aid. The Phek Forest Division has so far distributed the lamps to 20 villages - 10 under Meluri sub division and 10 under Tizu. The Division plans to cover few villages in the 4th phase.
