In perhaps one of the biggest recruits ever conducted by the Nagaland Police, a total of 1,108 recruits of the Nagaland Armed Police (India Reserve) Battalion today qualified the phase-1 basic training at NAPTC complex, Chumukedima. A combined attestation parade of the 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th NAP (IR) was held with pride and vigour, presenting the new batch of policemen who will become guardians of law.

Nagaland Home Minister Imkong L Imchen, chief guest at the passing out parade, said the uniform service is a profession which protects the life and property of citizens, weaker sections of the society, and that people have begun to realise the importance of the profession. Reflecting back to times when police service was considered “anti-Naga” and “agents of mainstream society” due to false propaganda, Imchen said many Naga youth were apprehensive of joining the police force. He however appreciated the change in mindsets of young Naga boys and girls, and said seeking police service was a choice of profession like any other.

Imchen pointed out that Naga society is at a crossroads and people must draw the line between crime and “nationalism,” adding Nagas no longer accept extortion, killing, murder, rape or any other kind of crime and violence. The Home Minister also said the state government is committed to maintaining law and order at any cost and called upon police officers and personnel to enforce ‘Rule of Law’, and maintain vigilance of any anti-people activities in the state. The strength and effectiveness of the government depends upon an impartial and effective police force, Imchen said, and added the image of the Nagaland Police in the rest of the country is highly appreciated and their performances in states like Chhattisgarh and Delhi have been admired. He also expressed hope that the 1st and 2nd NAP battalions deployed at Delhi will sincerely perform their duties.

The Home Minister further informed that a new Mahila Battalion for Nagaland Police has been sanctioned and will be raised next year. With this, the Minister said, employment opportunities for educated boys and girls would be created in the state. The state government has also submitted a proposal to the Home Ministry to accord sanction for a separate police training institute at Razaphima, under Medziphema sub-division, he said. Imchen also said the Home Ministry has been granting funds for improvement and modernisation of the police force and through this, the state police have improved its weaponry, transport and communication, security equipments, etc.

Imchen admitted he was aware of the poor accommodation of the IR battalions and expressed hope that the government would carry out the necessary steps for repairing and renovation in a phased manner. The Minister also suggested regular in-service training at all units, and officers and personnel update their knowledge to be successful in their profession.

Meanwhile, out of the total number of passing out recruits, 14 are graduates, 55 undergraduates, 193 matriculates and 846 under matriculates. Seven Cadet Havildars and R/Cs were also awarded certificates of merit and trophies for various disciplines.
