Changki, January 10 (MExN): The Baptist Church Changki (BCC) has begun its quasquicentennial celebrations with a two-day programme from January 10 to 11 at Changki village in Mokokchung district, commemorating 125 years of Christian faith, service and fellowship.

Church leaders, members and villagers, including those residing in urban areas, along with invited guests from across the region, have converged for the historic milestone, reflecting the enduring legacy of one of the oldest Baptist churches in the area.

The celebration is being observed on the theme ‘Kibuba tenüng uludakjang’ (loosely translated as “Magnify the Lord’s Name”) through a series of spiritual, community and commemorative events highlighting the church’s journey since its establishment.

A press release from the BCC informed that the programme began on Saturday night with a special thanksgiving service, featuring sermons and exhortations reflecting on the growth of the church and its role in shaping the spiritual and social fabric of Changki village and beyond.

Delivering the sermon, Rev Dr Akok Amri, Pastor at the Impur Baptist Arogo, dwelt on the generosity of God in showering blessings upon His people.

Various activities, including choir presentations, special prayers and sharing sessions, have been organised as part of the celebration.

On the eve of the opening day, the organisers carried out a special initiative by identifying the two eldest persons in the village—one male and one female—and presenting them with certificates and gifts. They also visited villagers aged above 80, offering prayers and sharing gifts.

A historical recounting of the church’s formation and progress over the decades was also presented, offering younger generations insight into the sacrifices and commitment of their forebears.

The second day of the programme will feature a thanksgiving worship service, bringing the congregation together in a spirit of grace and celebration. A valedictory programme is scheduled in the evening.

The occasion is serving as a platform to renew commitment to spiritual growth, social responsibility and community development, the release said.

Over the past 125 years, the BCC has played a significant role not only in religious life but also in education, moral guidance and social cohesion within the village, it noted.

The quasquicentennial celebration stands as a moment of gratitude and reflection, while looking ahead to continue the church’s mission in the years to come.
