Kohima, October 18 (MExN): With 5 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze, Dimapur today emerged as the overall champions of 12th Inter District Catch Them Young Tournament 2019 held at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Meriema, Kohima from October 16-18.
In the final match of the day, Kiphire defeated Tuensang by a lone goal to win the boys’ football final.
A total of 290 participants including 215 boys and 75 girls from the eleven districts took part in the three-day sports tournament.
Meanwhile, Football Scouts, Nikhil and Sumit selected 15 players (2 Goal Keepers, 5 Defenders, 5 Mid Fielders and 3 Attackers) for training at Bhaichung Bhutia School Delhi from the tournament.
A coaching games for the coaches will also scheduled on October 21 when four coaches will be selected as part of the team.
According to Director Youth Resources & Sports (YR&S), Akumla Chuba, ‘Catch Them Young Tournament’ started in 1974 with the motto “Catch them young and teach them right” had only football and athletics competitions.
The Department has taken the initiative to include wrestling, boxing, badminton and taekwondo in the coming years and it will tap the best talents of the sportspersons from the districts for further training, she informed.
Speaking at the closing session at IG Stadium as the special guest, Secretary YR&S, Alun Hangsing said that playing sports helps in overcoming physical challenges as well as gaining focus in life.
While sports as a career is bright and rewarding, one should involve in sports not only for career but to be healthy, he said.
Earlier, the Inter-District Tournament was inaugurated by Advisor YR&S, Er. Zale Neikha on October 16.
