1,35,306 CMHIS cards issued in Nagaland

A total of 1, 35, 306 Chief Minister Health Insurance Scheme (CMHIS) cards have been issued and distributed in Nagaland as of February 19, 2025. This was stated in Nagaland Economic Survey 2024-25 by Department of Economics & Statistics, Nagaland which was tabled at the recently concluded 6th session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly.

Additionally, 85, 968 households are registered under CMHIS, with the highest enrolment from the general category, followed by government employees and pensioners.

CMHIS is a flagship public health insurance initiated by the Government of Nagaland. Designed to provide cashless treatment to eligible beneficiaries, CMHIS bridges the gap for government employees, pensioners and indigenous inhabitants or permanent resident of Nagaland not covered under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (ABPM-JAY).

In convergence with ABPM-JAY, the scheme is referred to as the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana- Chief Minister Health Insurance Scheme (ABPM- JAY CMHIS and offers comprehensive health insurance benefits across two categories.

CMHIS employees and pensioners (EP) at the coverage of Rs. 20 lakhs per year per family and CMHIS General Category (GC) at Rs. 5 lakhs per year per family.  

The survey report stated that a total of 131 hospitals have been empanelled under CMHIS, including 76 hospitals under CMHIS (EP) and remaining hospitals under CMHIS & PMJAY (General) in Nagaland. In the area of financial utilization, the report stated that the CMHIS in the state demonstrated significant growth in enrolment, financial utilization, and healthcare accessibility.

The report claimed that the steady rise in financial utilization from Rs. 1.31 crore in 2022-23 to Rs. 472.08 crore in 2024-25 under CMHIS (EP) and from Rs. 32 lakh in 2018-19 to Rs. 427.15 crore in 2024-25 under CMHIS (General) & PMJAY, highlights the increasing reliance on the scheme for healthcare support. Additionally, the growing network of 131 empanelled hospitals ensures improved access to medical facilities across the state, it added.

“The state government's sustained commitment to healthcare affordability and accessibility is evident through continuous funding and expansion of services. The scheme not only reduces the financial burden on citizens but also strengthens the overall healthcare infrastructure, positioning Nagaland as a model for comprehensive health coverage,” the survey report stated.
