Sporadic incidence of violence continued to be reported from 28 Koridang Assembly Constituency in Mokokchung district. On February 23, 15 persons were taken into custody by the police following an alleged clash between supporters of opposing political parties at Longkhum village.
The Mokokchung district administration apprehending election-related trouble has promulgated prohibitory orders under Cr.PC section 144 in the village following since February 9.
As per official sources, security forces stationed at the village moved in after supporters of “different parties” faced-off and reportedly resorted to stone-pelting. The sources said that the clash lasted for around 15 minutes before central security forces stationed at the village brought the situation under control. 15 persons were detained, who were later handed over to the district police.
The sources, while informing that there were no report of injury, stated that the detainees were booked on charges of rioting under the IPC.
It was further informed that prohibitory orders were clamped at Ungma village this evening. The sources, while terming the promulgation as a preventive measure, said that it came into force following an incident the night before at the village. A gathering of at least 50 people was dispersed by security forces around midnight in the village, the sources said. It however could not be ascertained as regards the purpose of the alleged gathering.
