DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 28 (MExN): A consignment of contraband (ganja) weighing approximately 1540 kilograms was confiscated from a Guwahati bound pick-up truck (AS 01 U 4200) at New Field Checkpost, Dimapur on Wednesday, September 28. The seizure was made by Excise personnel at around 10:30 am today. Two persons, one Jagat Ch. Nath (25 years) and a Md. Rafik Ali (21 years), were arrested.
The contraband, concealed beneath vegetables, originated from somewhere in Dimapur and is believed to be valued at around Rs. 15, 4000 in the domestic black market. According to the Excise, an alert was sounded at the checkpost following receipt of reliable input from sources about a possible passage of a ganja-laden vehicle via New Field Check post on Wednesday.
Preliminary interrogation of the arrested duo revealed nothing substantial other than that the consignment was destined for Guwahati. According to the initial statement of the duo, they were directed to come to Dimapur by one person based in Guwahati to pick up some goods here. As instructed, they reached Dimapur the night before alongwith the pick-up truck, picked up the consignment and were making the return trip.
They were not able to disclose the exact location from where the contraband was loaded onto the vehicle in Dimapur, the Excise stated. They reportedly told interrogators that they were unaware of the actual contents of the goods they were shipping.
There have been several instances in the past, when investigators have not made any headway in the investigations as to trace the origin and destination of contrabands seized en route, let alone the arrest of the main criminals involved. If past records are to go by, the ‘breakthrough’ goes no further than the arrest of the occupants found in the vehicles carrying proscribed drugs, or for that matter illicit liquor. The case or the investigation literally comes to a full-stop there and then.
