Dimapur | December 12

A total of 15 organisations have presently been declared unlawful associations under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, as informed by the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

In a written reply, the Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, stated that the Union Government can declare any organisation as an unlawful association under the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of section 3 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (37 of 1967).

The declaration is applicable for the entire country, the MoS added.

Out of the total, most were based in the North-East, including seven in Manipur, two each in Assam and Tripura, and one each related to Nagaland and Meghalaya.

In the case of Nagaland, it was the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang) or NSCN (K).

However, it must be noted here that while some Naga Political Groups use the acronym NSCN (K), it is the Yung Aung-led NSCN (K), which is currently not in any kind of political talks with the Government of India.

All others are in some form of ceasefire and political talks with the GoI.
