Nagaland Police thrash NRYO in opening match

Nagaland Police (DGP Team Red) thrashed New Reserve Youth Organization (NRYO) 5-0 in the opening match of the 18th edition of the prestigious NSF Martyrs’ Memorial Trophy 2017 here today under the aegis of Angami Students’ Union (ASU).  

Kekhrieletuo opened the scoring for Nagaland Police in the 5th minute before Lima made it 2-0 a minute later. Lima added another one in the 23rd minute before Saku and Lipok Sashi scored a goal apiece in the 35th and 62nd minutes respectively to complete the rout.  

Yellow cards were issued to Amugha, Vikedosie and Hoinato of NRYO and Lipok Sashi of Nagaland Police for foul play. 

Earlier, the tournament was inaugurated by Minister for Roads & Bridges Dr. Neikiesalie (Nicky) Kire.  

Organizing Committee Convenor Kezhazer Angami stated that as the tournament is played with the motto “Goal for peace” and promised football lovers 21 days of exciting and total football.  

He said throughout the tournament, specially-abled and senior citizens will be given free entry while college students will get 50% concession. Students in school uniform will be allowed to enter for free after 2:30 pm.  

Apart from cash prize to champions (Rs. 1,60,000), runners-up (Rs. 1 lakh), 3rd (Rs. 50,000) and 4th place (Rs. 30,000), there will also be cash prizes of Rs. 10,000 each for four outstanding players, Rs. 10,000 as fair play award and a scooter for player of the tournament.  

Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) president Kesosul Christopher Ltu said the NSF Martyrs’ Memorial Trophy is a soccer tournament where young talents can avail the platform to exhibit and also further excel in their field of interest.  

Over the years, he said it is evident that the tournament has been increasing and also setting new benchmark and challenge year after year.  

“On the 18th edition of NSF Martyrs’ Memorial Trophy, let us pray and remember our martyrs who have sacrificed for our future and also reaffirm ourselves and dedicated for the cause and interest of our Naga people and the students in particular,” he said.  

The tournament is organized in honour and in remembrance of late Kekuojalie Sachii of Kohima Village and late Vikhozo Yhoshii of Kigwema village, who were victims to the indiscriminate firings of the Armed Police from Alichen, when the students’ fraternity, on March 20, 1986 were on a peaceful duty call of the Naga Students’ Federation to register Nagas’ resentment against the state government’s decision to the extension of Disturbed Area Belt from 5 km – 20 km along the Indo-Myanmar border and against the induction of Indian Police Service (IPS) cadres into the state of Nagaland.  

The inaugural function was chaired by ASU former president Medo Yhokha while welcome address was delivered by ASU president Visako Rino. ASU Secretary Games & Sports Meguo Ratsa administered oath to the participating teams.  

The tournament will go on till October 21.
