Mon, January 30: Suspension bridge over River Tenang connecting Leangha and Shiyong villages constructed under DUDA, Social Infrastructure Development Fund (SIDF) 2010-11 was formally inaugurated at Thromhong field. N. Thongwang Konyak, MLA, Chairman NKVIB and DPDB Mon inaugurated the bridge on January 29.
In his inaugural speech, Thongwang said that the people of Leangha and Shiyong villages are fortunate to have the bridge because only the said bridge had been taken up by the Government for construction out of the 28 proposed suspension bridges in the state. He informed that the proposal for construction of the bridge was submitted to the Government in 2009.
It may be mentioned that the road via this bridge was the only route to Assam for the entire district of Mon in the pass. The British built the first bridge in the same location way back in 1929. Later the people of Chi, Leangha and Totok constructed it in 1963 and the present construction is initiated for the third time.
Informing that many development schemes would be initiated and taken up shortly, he appealed to the people to remain united and continue to support him and the Government for all round development of his constituency. He also informed that he is trying his best to fulfill the aspiration of the people, which his predecessor have fail to do so. He also thanked the people of Shiyong village for clearing the roads for the visiting officials for the inauguration of the bridge.
SDO (Civil) Wakching Manpai speaking on behalf of the district administration said that the bridge in the present context may be useful only to the people of few villages but the significant of the bridge bears a very good historical background, and appealed to the people to uphold the value of our culture and its route. He also urged upon the people to extend cooperation to the elected representatives and the Government for all round community development.
SDO (DUDA) Moba in his short speech called upon the people to have ownership of the bridge and support the Government for more visible development. The Chief Angh of Leangha Yanglem Angh in his welcome speech spoke on the significant of the bridge in the bygone years and lauded the MLA for construction of the bridge for the people. Pangkai Chairman Village council, Shiyong and Tingtong, President NPF 46 AC Mon also delivered short speeches. Chingkhak Deacon, Leangha village pronounced the invocation while Talem Youth Director, Leangha village said the benediction. The programme was attended by the leaders of Shiyong and Leangha villages led by the chairman, Anghs and head GBs.
